I spent about one and a half days shooting all the shots for this in depth article into the working life of private Chef John Ramsay. Shot for the Homes & Interiors Scotland 'This Life', these shoots are always quite a challenge, and a mix of photographic approaches. Usually with one shoot I have to take interior photographs, landscape photographs, portrait photographs, and 'off the cuff' reportage style shots, to name just a few, and all these styles usually within the same day. It takes some mental flexibility to be able to switch between all these so quickly and so many times in one day, all part of being a professional photographer though, it actually ups my game considerably, which is always more than welcome.
Gillian Welsh was on board for the first day as art director, I'm amazed at how much work we can get done in one day at times. Starting off shooting in the local butchers where John sources his meat, I had to get lights set up in a public place without causing too much disruption, then out of Pitlochry to John's cottage overlooking Loch Tummel to get some shots of him at home, we had to have that part of the shoot wrapped in time to move on again to the location where John was cooking for some clients. Frantic to say the least, each move meant packing and unpacking a lot of equipment, buts that's what it takes to get the shots, the effort from everyone was more than worth it.
John is a talented professional, he's been in the business for twenty eight years working all over the world, you can read more on his background and achievements on his website here.
